Why everyone hates playing moonballers

Still Coming Down

We all know one.

Every tennis club has a moonballer. High balls. No pace. Endless rallies. Somehow, they always seem to win the matches nobody else wants to play.

That’s what makes them frustrating. They don’t give us rhythm. There’s no clean contact, no pace to work with, no easy timing. Just another looping ball dropping near the baseline.

Again. And again.

At some point, we usually start doing too much. Going for lines too early. Trying to finish points that aren’t really there. Meanwhile, the moonballer stays exactly the same. Calm. Patient. Slightly annoying.

That’s the trap.

The rallies never feel clean. The match becomes awkward and scrappy. Slow in a way that makes us impatient. Then we look at the score and realise we’re somehow 4–1 down wondering how it happened.

Deep down, most players respect moonballers more than they admit. Because they understand something tennis keeps teaching us over and over again:

Nobody gets points for style.

That’s why these matches stay in our heads afterwards. Not because of the winners we hit, but because of the mistakes we rushed. One bad decision. One impatient forehand. One missed short ball we should probably have made.

Every club has the same conversation after losing to one.

“I should never lose to that.”

And yet, it keeps happening.
